Robert Medina

Robert Medina is a professional engineer licensed in the states of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, and Virginia, and is the founder and president of Medina Consultants. He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1975 from Newark College of Engineering (New Jersey Institute of Technology) and has pursued continuing education at NJIT, Rutgers University and Penn State. Mr. Medina grew up in Union City, Hudson County, NJ and then lived in Bergenfield, Bergen County, NJ. He moved to Morris County following his career to Morristown, NJ and resided in Morris County, NJ for over 20 years. Mr. Medina currently resides in Hunterdon County, NJ.

For over 34 years, Mr. Medina has worked on major engineering projects throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regions and Puerto Rico. These projects have covered a wide range of design in land development, highways and mass transit, education facilities, flood control and environmental permits.
Mr. Medina’s expertise in flood studies and flood control projects goes back to the beginning of his career in civil engineering when, after graduating from college, he worked on flood studies under a federal flood insurance administration contract for communities in upstate New York and Bergen County, NJ. Subsequently, he worked on flood control projects in Passaic County, NJ under contract to the US Army Corps of Engineers.
 
From 1980 to 1989, Mr. Medina was Project Engineer and Project Manager on several flood studies throughout New Jersey for NJDEP, US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. As Director of Water Resources for a consulting firm, he was the Project Manager for the Passaic River Flood Control Project in the 1980s and prepared flood studies along the Delaware River in Warren and Sussex Counties, NJ. Medina Consultants is currently under contract to FEMA to prepare flood studies in Region II, which covers all of New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.
 
Mr. Medina founded Medina Consultants in 1989 as a small, sole-proprietorship located in Hackettstown, NJ providing broad-based engineering and land surveying services to public and private clients in the New Jersey / New York region. Through client service and professional expertise, the firm has grown steadily over the past 20 years into a 130 person multi-disciplined professional corporation with offices in Hackettstown, Newark, and Hamilton, NJ; Manhattan, NY; Bethlehem, PA; Hartford, CT; and Baltimore, MD. Medina Consultants was ranked No. 250 in the Top 500 Largest Hispanic-Owned Companies by Hispanic Business magazine in their June 2009 issue. Based on the types of businesses included in this listing, Medina is the largest Hispanic-owned engineering and land surveying firm headquartered in the Northeast.
Mr. Medina is considered an expert in the field of civil engineering and is a respected leader in the business community. As a result, he has received several gubernatorial and agency appointments throughout his career. Mr. Medina was appointed to the NJ Educational Facilities Authority by Governor James McGreevey in 2002. He served the Authority as a member through 2007 and as elected Vice Chair from 2003 to 2007. In 2005, he was appointed to the Delaware River Flood Mitigation Task Force by Acting Governor Richard Codey, where he was also a member of their Technical Committee. In 2006, Governor Jon Corzine appointed Mr. Medina to the New Jersey Economic Growth Council. In 2008, NJDEP Commissioner Lisa Jackson appointed Mr. Medina to the DEP Permit Efficiency Review Task Force, where he was also a member of their Water Quality Committee.
 
Mr. Medina is active in the engineering business community and is an advocate for disadvantaged, small, minority-owned and women-owned businesses. He served as Chairman of the American Council of Engineering Companies of NJ’s Small Firms Committee from 2005 to 2007, and has been a Metropolitan Region Board Member of the American Council of Engineering Companies of NY since 2006. He is also a member of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of NJ, the Morris County Hispanic-American Chamber of Commerce, PRIMER Network, and is a Board Member of the National Hispanic Business Group.
 
Mr. Medina has been honored for his work in both the engineering and Hispanic communities. He was named Entrepreneur of the Year by NJ Transit Corporation in 2001, Businessman of the Year by the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in 2002, Businessman of the Year by the Morris County Hispanic-American Chamber of Commerce in 2004 and the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Region V Hispanic Businessman of the Year in 2005. USHCC Region V encompasses the Northeastern and Middle Atlantic states from Virginia to Maine and all of Canada. In 2008, the The Latino Institute, Inc. recognized Mr. Medina as an outstanding business leader by presenting him with an Empresario Award at their 4th Annual Latino Issues Convention and Business Expo.
